Sitting on
London Clay

Commissioned by Network Rail and London Festival of Architecture, London Bridge Station 2020.

A project using earth – a natural material found beneath Londoners’ feet –
to offer a social furniture that is breathable and sustainable. The bench’s modular system offers different arrangements for different social needs, while the materiality of clay improves indoor air quality by absorbing humidity and toxins. As the Crossrail development excavates 6 million tons of earth –
it is time to re-appropriate construction waste.
Sitting on London Clay is supported by Pro-duck, Clayworks and Guy Valentine Ltd, without whom the project would not have been made possible. [Photos by Jim Stephenson; Visualisation by Local Collective]
