(if) the whole street is a House

Architectural Association Summer School 2022 / Unit 4.

This unit operated as a pop-up gallery, in collaboration with Richard Saltoun Gallery, where tutorials and research was integrated with the public viewing of art and architectural objects, workshops, and celebrations.

We tested for a renewed definition of London’s high streets, reimagining them as sites of expansive expression and exchange that can accommodate a diversity of usage requirements; the unit itself being one such test of a mixed-use typology.

Our students investigated the meaningful relationships and resilient partnerships that define this type of social infrastructure, bringing together an ecosystem of local organisations, networks and services with the high street.

Together, we curated an urban living room of narratives and reimaginings, at the AA Gallery (36 Bedford Square), to share our collective research with the local community and promote discussion between a range of stakeholders.

"We hope through renewing the definition of high streets, we unlearn, reassess and reimagine London’s high streets with social integration prioritised, one that strengthens communities, is inclusive and celebrates a good quality of life." - Lisa Chan, founder of It's a local collective.
